Americans show greater trust in supplements than vaccines

Americans appear to have greater trust in herbal supplements than vaccines, and this has boosted supplement sales to record-breaking highs.

According to a survey by the Council for Responsible Nutrition, 73% of Americans take nutritional supplements. Another survey, conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the American Osteopathic Association, found that 86% of Americans take some kind of nutritional supplement.

Whether the true number is 86%, 73%, or somewhere in between, it’s far greater than the percentage of Americans who are vaccinated. According to CDC data, the number of vaccinated Americans hovers just above 50%.

These numbers are even more remarkable considering the government has embarked on a campaign of intimidation and coercion to raise vaccination rates. At the same time the government is actively censoring—with the cooperation of Big Tech—any discussion on alternative therapies, which includes nutritional supplements.

2020 sales growth of herbals

When comparing 2019 sales with 2020 sales, the American Botanical Council determined that sales of herbals increased by 17.3%. Total sales rose to $11.26 billion, the first time ever that sales exceeded $10 billion. It was also the greatest year-to-year increase, far outpacing the previous record in 2018 of 9.4%.

It is important to understand this number represents just one category of the supplement industry—the portion colloquially termed “herbals.”

The American Botanical Council considers “herbals” as a product where the plant or fungi is the primary ingredient.

This narrow definition excludes regular vitamins and minerals, most herbal teas, botanical cosmetic ingredients, and government-approved herbal drugs in over-the-counter medicines. These catagories account for additional tens of billions in sales and have also increased during the pandemic; however, specific sales figures for these categories have not yet been published.

The dramatic sales growth was reported in the 2020 Herb Market Report, a yearly report generated by the American Botanical Council.

“These sales data suggest that millions of people seem to have realized that they have something called an ‘immune system,’ and that they can enhance its function by modifying their behaviors, including, but not limited to, an improvement of their diets, and the consumption of various dietary supplements,” said Mark Blumenthal, founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council.

Blumenthal also elaborated on a point that is misunderstood by the mainstream media: Even if herbals are not directly proven to prevent or heal Covid specifically, they have a proven track record—sometimes going back thousands of years—of providing overall immune system support.

“While there are little scientific or clinical data supporting the use of botanical dietary supplements to prevent or treat COVID-19, the fact that many consumers chose to use these products indicates a strong consumer interest in natural products as a means to improve their overall health and particularly to enhance their immune response to potential challenges,” said Blumenthal.

Some bullet points from the survey include:

• Elderberry was the top-purchased herbal with sales exceeding $275 million for that one ingredient alone.

• Other herbals in the top ten included turmeric, echinacea, muchrooms, ginger, garlic and flax seed.

• In addition to immune support, consumers indicated stress relief and heart health as two other leading reasons for purchasing herbal products.

• Overall, combination formulas outpaced single-ingredient sales in 2020. This a trend which has continued since 2011, and is likely due to the fact that consumers recognize the synergistic benefits that are observed with more complex combinations.

Related survey

related survey conducted in April found that 43% of Americans added vitamins and/or other immune-supporting supplements to their routine during the first year of the Covid pandemic.

The 43% number includes Americans who were already supplementing, but added new products to specifically address building the immune system. The survey was conducted by polling company YouGov on behalf of oral health product company TheraBreath.
